Hi Wired Design Community!!
Lights, Lights, and more Lights! Kickstarter is an AMAZING format for bringing creations out to the public!! I for one, love it!!
Has everyone like me noticed all the bike lights projects on Kickstarter? I have. I love the innovation. Then i thought; wait a minute.....bicycle lighting...we need them...we have them...they get stolen...then we buy more! Some people have designed awesome lighting, whether they attach to handlebars, wheels, seat posts...but thats the key element...they ATTACH to something that is already a component of the bike. WHY!!!
Why can't we designers design something real! Not just come up with great designs for product, but actually design engineer something that is truely different? Something structural? Something that won't get stolen? Something that won't clutter your bike and take away from the design?
How about this for starters....the stem of a bicycle. The stem is the most over looked item on a bike. Is it's only job to connect the fork, frame and handlebars? Ok, yes, you can't have a bike without it! It is one of the most important pieces of the bike. So why hasn't anyone ever thought to redesign our notion of what a bicycle stem should be? Why can't the lighting system actually be the stem itself?
I have lots of friends from professional cyclists to the every day commuter. They all say the same thing. First, my bike light is always getting stolen. When it's not getting stolen, it is getting lost, because we take it off so it doesn't get stolen, then can't find it when we need it.
So....I came up with a solution.....let me know what you think!
