Hoffmann was born in Hildesheim Germany, 1856 and designed a moderate number of typefaces, including Block BQ, and Berthold Herold Reklameschrift™. His designs were said to be the influence for Lucian Bernhard's Sachplakat poster art, including the iconic Manoli Cigarette poster and the vibrant Bosch poster.

Hoffmann's Block BQ's rough edges gave Bernhard's poster art an electric and vibrant quality. Later, in 1895 Hoffmann became the head of H. Berthold AG's print department and in 1921, he published theChronicle of Berthold. Other designs by Hoffmann include: HerautGothic 821 w/ Vladimir Yefimov, Herold and Hermes

The surname Hoffmann has produced a number of typography personalities, including: Lothar Hoffmann Eduard Hoffmann, who commissioned Neu Haas Grotesk.
